Tuina (Chinese Bodywork)
Tuina 推拿 also know as Anmo 按摩 is a system of hands on therapy used for various health conditions. While it can be deeply relaxing this is not the only benefit gained. Chinese massage has been used for thousands of years to treat many different health conditions and there are a wide variety of styles and specialties that have been developed over the centuries. There are systems that are used specifically for pediatrics. Conditions such as colic, abdominal pain, nausea, low immunity, cough, etc. are treated with this form of bodywork. In China, massage is one of the primary treatments for children’s diseases. There are also systems of Chinese massage that work in the field of traumatology. They work to set broken bones, treat acute injuries and help people heal from mild to severe traumas. Another type of massage is used to treat various internal medical conditions as well as chronic pain. Ira Wahrman L.Ac has been trained extensively in using massage for the treatment of chronic pain, internal medical disorders and pediatric disorders.
Reflexology (Chinese Foot massage)
Reflexology is a type of Chinese massage that focuses specifically on the foot. On our feet we have what is called a microsystem. On this microcystem exist a small image of our entire body. A reflex point can be found for each body part, organ, gland, etc. By applying appropriate pressure to these reflex points it is thought to affect the functioning of the organ or body part your are targeting. For example when treating a patient with constipation pressure would be applied to the reflex areas or points that correspond with the large intestine to increase movement in that organ. Reflexology is great for general relaxation and reducing anxiety. It is used for a wide variety of conditions related to the male and female reproductive systems, digestive system, urinary system, cardiovascular system to name a few. Reflexology is often performed following a tuina massage session and the effects of each complement each other.
A little history
Aside from Ira’s intensive study of acupuncture he has also studied Chinese Bodywork both in China and the United States. Since 2011 he has been a close student of Master Yu. Master Yu is a third generation Chinese doctor. He grandfather began practicing medicine during the Japanese invasion of China in the 1930’s. Master Yu is very good at treating chronic pain conditions as well internal medical conditions. His treatments are simple but profound. The core of Ira’s bodywork training comes from Master Yu. Ira has also studied acupuncture with Master Yu as well.
Ira has also studied bodywork with Tom Bisio. Tom’s training has helped Ira to refine his understanding of treating acute and chronic pain conditions. The combination of methods from both of these teachers has brought patients great results.
Bodywork is a great complement to acupuncture and internal herbal medicine. It strengthens the effects of both and these therapies work synergistically to give the patients the greatest benefit.
